Jazz
pianist/composer Joshua Goodman began his musical training in Montreal
in classical music at age 6, but would pursue an undeniable jazz calling
through his teens, eventually arriving at McGill University in the Jazz
Studies program under Fred Henke. His post-grad studies would take
him to New York City, where he would become an avid student of the legendary
Barry Harris. Returning to Canada and armed with Harris' acclaimed
bebop knowledge base, he began to perform regularly throughout Canada,
pausing to attend the Banff Jazz Program in 1994. This experience
would unlock more doors for Joshua, whose affiliations with Pat LaBarbera,
Hugh Fraser, John Clayton & Kenny Wheeler would catalyze more playing
opportunities in America and Europe, before heading to California to continue
post-graduate studies at California Universities. There, while becoming
a regular in the San Franciso and Los Angeles. jazz circuit, he would record
with virtuoso vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and, after studies with legendary
Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes, would go on to win first prize at the Latin
Jazz Festival in Reno, California. 2002 saw Joshua return to Toronto,
Canada to build his working quintet featuring some of the country's most
in demand and decorated jazz musicians of this generation of players.
He is considered one of the exciting new post-bop voices on the scene in
Toronto, as his national reputation continues to grow. |
